One winner per trip style , compared on the same axes. Ratings and starting prices come straight from Hostelworld; the Best For, Trip style won and Standout columns are our call, made from each hostel's own listing and its guest reviews.

This page is a curated hub, not an 80-hostel directory: ten hostels, each chosen because it wins one kind of Lisbon trip, ranked on how strong the verdict is (rating, depth of reviews and how many travellers it suits). Every pick is checked against live Hostelworld data and its recent guest reviews, and every pick gets a plain For / Not for . Where a hostel's usual "best for" tag survives the evidence, we say so; where it doesn't, we say that too.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 9.7/10 | 14077 | 4.82/5 | 4.84/5 | 4.82/5 | 4.86/5 | 4.90/5 |
Verdict: the best all-round hostel in Lisbon, and the youth and first-timer winner. It's the "best overall" pick on every list, and the evidence backs it.
Rating: one of the highest-rated hostels in the city on one of its deepest review bases, with near-perfect marks for cleanliness and fun.
Price: one of the pricier dorm beds on this page; breakfast and the pub crawl cost extra, and the dinner is the one to budget for.
Base: Rua de São Nicolau in Baixa, the flat grid between Rossio and the river. For a first trip that matters: it's the easiest part of Lisbon to find your way around, and most of day one is walkable from the door.
Why it wins: Mamma's Dinner is the signature. Put your name down early, sit near Mamma, and by dessert you'll have someone to explore with.
Tip-based walking tours and Sintra day trips cover the daytime, and the living room and bar are where people who skip the crawl still find company. It is, as one guest put it, a "great social hostel for first time travelers."
Worth knowing: there are female-only dorms, a lift and air-conditioning, and reception is open 24 hours. Group bookings aren't accepted, even when made separately.

| 9.7/10 | 15164 | 4.88/5 | 4.90/5 | 4.88/5 | 4.86/5 | 4.82/5 |
Verdict: the party winner. The popular "Lisbon's party hostel" label holds up on the evidence.
Rating: rated right at the top, on the largest review base of any hostel on this page, with fun and location among its best marks.
Price: mid-range for central Lisbon, with dinner offered nightly at a fair all-in price and breakfast a small extra.
Base: Rua de São Julião in Baixa, a few minutes from Praça do Comércio and Rua Augusta. Bairro Alto and Cais do Sodré are an easy walk for the crawl, and the walk home is short.
Why it wins: the calendar never stops: a family dinner, a pub crawl and a lobby bar that fills up every night, then walking tours and Sintra or Cabo da Roca trips for the day after. The staff are the engine, running the crawls and making sure nobody sits alone. The crowd skews early-to-late twenties, with plenty of guests around thirty.
Worth knowing: dorms have air-conditioning and curtained beds, there's a lift, and reception is open 24 hours. Groups of more than five need to contact the hostel before booking.

| 9.9/10 | 7237 | 5.00/5 | 4.96/5 | 4.98/5 | 4.98/5 | 4.96/5 |
Verdict: the solo winner, and the highest-rated hostel on this page. It's built for people who arrive alone.
Rating: near-perfect across the board, with a flawless security mark and fun, staff and cleanliness right behind it.
Price: the most expensive stay on this page once the Not-So-Solo package is included (activities, dinners and hours of open bar). Compare it with a bed-only rate before you book; guests who took the package say it paid for itself.
Base: Praça dos Restauradores, where Avenida da Liberdade meets Baixa. Bairro Alto, Alfama and the Sintra train at Rossio are all a short walk away, and the metro stop shares the square's name.
Why it wins: outings run every day, dinners are shared, the common areas fill with games and next-day plans, and a volunteer leads a night out for anyone who wants one. Breakfast is included and the dorms are air-conditioned. Most guests travel solo, many on their first solo trip, so you're never the odd one out.
Worth knowing: the hostel says the experience suits travellers aged 20 to 40, though all adults are welcome. There's no lift, and reception is open 24 hours.

| 9.7/10 | 6063 | 4.86/5 | 4.96/5 | 4.94/5 | 4.68/5 | 4.86/5 |
Verdict: the gay-friendly winner. Its own house rules name harassment and discrimination as grounds for removal without refund, and that written rule counts for more than any "welcoming" line.
Rating: top-tier, on a deep review base, and near-spotless on cleanliness and location.
Price: one of the cheaper central beds on this page, and breakfast is included.
Base: Rua de São Nicolau in Baixa, around the corner from Rua Augusta. Bairro Alto is a short walk uphill for the night, and you come back to a calmer street.
Why it wins: this was Lisbon's first hostel, opened in 2005 by four locals, and it still runs like a flagship. The three-course house dinner is the easy way to meet people, the free walking and nightlife tours add more, and every floor has its own lounge. Female-only dorms come with privacy curtains.
Worth knowing: reception is open 24 hours, and some guests found the free breakfast light on protein.

| 9.5/10 | 7020 | 4.92/5 | 4.74/5 | 4.96/5 | 4.66/5 | 4.70/5 |
Verdict: the airport and in-transit winner. It's easy to reach, never closes, and breakfast is included.
Rating: excellent on a deep review base, with staff and security marks that are close to perfect.
Price: budget-friendly, and breakfast is included. Private rooms are available, some with their own bathroom.
Base: Rua Rodrigues Sampaio, behind the top of Avenida da Liberdade near Marquês de Pombal. The metro is about a minute away, with one change for the airport, and the old town is roughly a 20-minute walk, downhill on the way there.
Why it wins: the family who run it host through the kitchen. There's a free breakfast with fresh pancakes, then soup, snacks and tapas nights, plus Milkshake Monday and the odd pub crawl. Airport transfers can be arranged, the luggage room covers early flights and late check-outs, and a 24-hour reception means a midnight arrival is no problem.
Worth knowing: some guests found the crowd a little older, which suits some travellers more than others. Beds have curtains.

| 9.3/10 | 6569 | 4.66/5 | 4.72/5 | 4.38/5 | 4.18/5 | 4.38/5 |
Verdict: the best-located hostel in Lisbon. It's inside Rossio station, with Sintra trains leaving from downstairs.
Rating: strong on a deep review base, with location its best mark.
Price: among the cheapest dorm beds on this page; breakfast is extra.
Base: the second floor of Rossio station, reached by escalator or lift, in the middle of Baixa. Chiado, Bairro Alto and the Restauradores and Rossio metro stops are a few minutes' walk, and the Aerobus stops in the square.
Why it wins: it's hard to arrive anywhere easier. The common room is a bright indoor garden, lit from above, with hammocks, a bar, a pool table and a shared kitchen, and the dorms are big, with tall curtained bunks and plenty of storage. Daily events run for anyone who wants company.
Worth knowing: some guests found the dorms hot in high summer, with the air-conditioning struggling to keep up. It's wheelchair friendly, and reception is open 24 hours.

| 9.2/10 | 4297 | 4.84/5 | 4.36/5 | 4.52/5 | 4.32/5 | 4.56/5 |
Verdict: the pick for space, design and a calmer stay. It's also the best base on this page for remote workers.
Rating: solid on a large review base, with security its strongest mark.
Price: mid-range. It's often called Lisbon's best budget pick, but the reason to book Sant Jordi is the house and the garden.
Base: Arroios, a residential district north-east of the centre. The Anjos metro is five minutes away and Tram 28 stops outside, but the centre is a 20–30 minute walk.
Why it wins: the building is the draw: an early 20th-century house with period detailing, a large garden, terraces and a courtyard bar that opens up in the evening. Every dorm has air-conditioning and curtained beds, the kitchen is huge, and the coworking space and occasional yoga suit people staying a while. "The garden is a great place to relax and hide from the heat of the middle of the day," as one guest put it.
Worth knowing: breakfast is extra, and reception is open 24 hours.

| 9.3/10 | 1580 | 4.78/5 | 4.18/5 | 4.80/5 | 4.72/5 | 4.80/5 |
Verdict: the cheap winner, with the lowest-priced dorm bed on this page in a house that doesn't feel cheap.
Rating: strong, with cleanliness and staff among its best marks.
Price: the cheapest bed on this page. Breakfast is extra, and card payments are only accepted above €25.
Base: Intendente, a multicultural neighbourhood north of the tourist core, near the Intendente metro on the Green Line. It's a 25–35 minute walk to Baixa, and the streets are more residential and less polished than Baixa at night.
Why it wins: you don't give up much for the price. The rooftop bar has a view over the city and works as the hostel's living room, there's an event every night from tapas to the pub crawl, and the Sintra tour is one of the hostel's most talked-about trips. Dorms have air-conditioning and key-card doors, rooms are cleaned daily, and there's no curfew.
Worth knowing: reception is open 24 hours, so a late arrival is fine, though the hostel asks you to email ahead if you'll get in after 11 p.m.

| 8.6/10 | 532 | 4.79/5 | 4.93/5 | 4.57/5 | 4.57/5 | 4.61/5 |
Verdict: the private-room winner. It's a small 18th-century house of seven one-off rooms and suites, and it works as a couple's base.
Rating: good rather than top-tier, on a smaller review base, and its location mark is close to perfect.
Price: private rooms only, and good value for the address.
Base: Rua de São Paulo, on a square by São Paulo church, two minutes from Cais do Sodré station. Pink Street and the Time Out Market are around the corner, Chiado and Bairro Alto are under ten minutes on foot, and the Cascais beach train leaves from the station.
Why it wins: each room is individually designed, some are big enough for a lounge area, and the shared kitchen is one of the nicest you'll find. Staff hand out local tips at check-in. It's "more Airbnb than a hostel," as one guest put it, and for a couple that's the appeal.
Worth knowing: some suites share one bathroom, so check the room details before you book. There's a lift and no curfew.

Verdict: the surf-trip winner. It's in Cascais, not Lisbon, a train ride out of the city by Carcavelos beach.
Rating: the lowest-rated hostel on this page, on a small review base. Location is its best mark by far, which is the reason to book it.
Price: mid-range. Breakfast is extra, and Cascais charges its own, lower tourist tax.
Base: Cascais, beside Carcavelos: about 50 metres from Carcavelos station and 500 metres from the beach, which is the closest surf beach to Lisbon by train. Central Lisbon is a straight ride on the Cascais line to Cais do Sodré.
Why it wins: surf is the whole point of this house, and its crowd of surfers, skaters and beach people reflects it. There's an outdoor pool with a bar, a yoga deck in the garden, a skate ramp and BBQs, and every room, from 4-bed to 8-bed, has its own bathroom. Guests call the surf lessons "a MUST"; the hostel doesn't run them itself, so book with a surf school at Carcavelos beach and budget for board hire separately.
Worth knowing: there's no air-conditioning, so dorms run warm in high summer. Reception runs 8 a.m. to midnight, and quiet hours start at 10 p.m.

Surf first? More surf hostels in Lisbon
Both win a first trip for someone travelling alone, but they win it differently. Home Lisbon Hostel is the looser, more mixed option: one great dinner, free walking tours, and a living room where you can join in or not.
Goodmorning Solo Traveller Hostel gives you a full daily programme , with outings, dinners, breakfast included and an 18+ crowd that's almost all solo. We'd send a nervous first-time solo traveller to Goodmorning, and a first-timer who wants to set their own pace to Home, which is also the cheaper stay once Goodmorning's package is included.
These are the two names every list leads with, best overall and best party, and the evidence backs both. Yes! Lisbon Hostel has the bigger night: a crawl every night, a busy bar and a crowd that goes out.
Home Lisbon Hostel has the better dinner table and the calmer dorms , with a crawl if you want one and no stag groups. Yes! has the better night out; Home is the one you'll sleep in.
Both are arrival picks, for different arrivals. Lisbon Destination Hostel wins if you come by train or plan a Sintra day: you're inside Rossio station and in the middle of Baixa.
Lisboa Central Hostel wins for flights, with the metro a minute away, transfers on request, a free breakfast and a 24-hour reception, at the cost of a 20-minute walk to the old town. Destination has the better address; Central has the easier airport run and the breakfast.
When we checked, dorm beds on this page started from about €10 a night, and typical dorm rates ran nearer €32–40. Private rooms mostly averaged €40–70. Prices are lowest in January and highest from August to September , so book early for summer weekends.
Add Lisbon's tourist tax of €4 per person per night , capped at seven nights and usually paid on arrival (Cascais charges its own, lower rate). Even with the tax, a dorm bed costs a fraction of a central hotel room, and a few hostels include breakfast.
For most first trips, Baixa : flat, central and walkable, with the metro, the Aerobus and the Sintra train at Rossio close by. Bairro Alto is the nightlife district, great to walk to and noisy to sleep in.
Cais do Sodré has Pink Street, the Time Out Market and the Cascais beach train. Alfama is old, beautiful and quiet at night, but steep with a backpack. Graça is calmer and higher up, with some of the best miradouros (viewpoints) in the city.
This page is organised by trip style rather than neighbourhood, because the right hostel for your trip matters more than the right postcode. Each review above tells you what its area means for that trip.
Yes. Lisbon is one of Europe's safer capitals, and violent crime is rare. The real risks are pickpockets on the 28 tram , where I still keep my phone zipped away, and around Cais do Sodré late at night, plus the persistent "hash" sellers in Baixa, whose product is fake: ignore them and walk on.
On this page, eight of the ten hostels have 24-hour reception, most have security lockers, and several offer female-only dorms, some with privacy curtains. If you'll arrive late, check reception hours on the listing before you book.
For solo travellers, Goodmorning Solo Traveller Hostel . It's the highest-rated hostel on this page and is built around people arriving alone, with daily outings, shared dinners and an 18+ crowd. For partying, Yes! Lisbon Hostel : a family dinner, a pub crawl and a busy bar every night, from a Baixa base a short walk from the nightlife.
If you're solo and want to party, either works. Goodmorning is more structured, and Yes! is more about the night out.
No central neighbourhood is off-limits, but a few are worth thinking twice about as a base. Bairro Alto is the best night out in Lisbon and a hard place to sleep, because its narrow streets stay loud into the small hours.
Alfama's steep hills and staircases are hard work with luggage. Around Martim Moniz and Intendente , some travellers find the streets rougher late at night, though the area is busy and lively by day.
Staying outside the centre saves money but costs time, so check how far your hostel is from a metro stop. For a first trip, Baixa or the area around Avenida da Liberdade keeps most of the city a flat walk or a short ride away.
Most Lisbon hostels don't set one, but some do. On this page, Goodmorning Solo Traveller Hostel is strictly 18+ and says the experience suits travellers aged 20 to 40, though all adults are welcome. The other nine set no minimum adult age .
Minors are a different matter: several hostels only take under-18s with a parent or guardian, or when the group books a whole dorm or a private room. If your age is near a cut-off, check the listing before booking.
Daniela Pereira is a Lisbon local, 27, with years of hostel stays across Portugal and Europe behind her, and she still books a dorm before a hotel. Every verdict on this page comes from that first-hand sense of what makes a bed worth booking, checked against the evidence above. More about Daniela is on the About page.
