Ranked on surf evidence first (lessons, board hire, a surf-beach base, and whether guests back up what the hostel claims), then on rating and review depth. Four of the five are beach bases on the Cascais train line; one is a city hostel for surfers who also want Lisbon's nights. Ratings and starting dorm prices in the table come straight from Hostelworld, with a dash where no dorm rate is listed.
| Hostel | Price | Rating | Best For | Surf access | Getting to the waves |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lisbon Surf Hostel | from €23 | 7.9/10 | Surfers wanting a social base | Surf house; boards via separate operator | Beach 500 m, station 50 m |
| The Salty Yoga & Surf Retreat | from €38 | 8.2/10 | Structured surf and yoga trips | Lessons and board hire in-house | About 15 min walk to beach |
| Ljmonade | from €25 | 9.3/10 | Solo and women travellers | Arrange your own lessons and boards | 10–15 min walk to beach |
| Lisbon Chillout Hostel | from €17 | 8.8/10 | Lisbon nights, cheap bed | Surf class booked via hostel | Metro, then about 24 min train |
| Legasea - Cascais | — | 9.7/10 | Couples and light sleepers | Location only; no lessons or hire | Few minutes' walk to beach |

Verdict: the strongest surf identity on the list and the name most surfers search for.
Base: Carcavelos, about 50 metres from the train station and 500 metres from the beach. That's the closest surf beach to Lisbon by train, so you can be in the water early and back in the city for dinner without a car.
Surf evidence: surf is the whole point of this house, and the crowd reflects it: surfers, skaters and people who want a beach base within reach of Lisbon. The surf lessons are the highlight of a stay here, and the location marks are among the best on the list. There's a pool and pool bar, a garden yoga deck, a skate ramp, BBQs and a massage room, and every room, from 4-bed to 8-bed, has its own bathroom.
Worth knowing: board hire isn't something the hostel sells itself, so budget for a separate operator rather than expecting kit off the rack. There's no air-conditioning, so the dorms run warm in high summer. Breakfast costs extra, reception runs 8 a.m. to midnight, and quiet hours start at 10 p.m.

| 8.2/10 | 98 | 4.82/5 | 3.91/5 | 4.27/5 | 4.55/5 | 4.91/5 |
Verdict: the only hostel on the list that actually sells surf lessons and board hire on site, as long as you understand how the booking works.
Base: a quiet residential street in Cascais, about 700 metres from Monte Estoril station (the second-to-last stop on the Cascais line, roughly 30 minutes from Cais do Sodré). The house says the nearest beaches are five minutes away; some guests put the walk closer to 15. Either way, you're on the coast, not commuting to it.
Surf evidence: its own listing sells surf lessons and board rental by the day, and yoga by the class, all paid on top of the bed (the figures are in the cost answer below). The pool and garden are the best-looking outdoor space on this list, the security and cleanliness marks are near the top, and organised dinners and activities make it easy to meet people. Guests who got the most from it went for the full package: "Better to go for a package deal with surfing/yoga/breakfast."
Worth knowing: a plain Hostelworld booking includes no lessons, no board hire and no breakfast. The all-inclusive surf-and-yoga packages are sold only on the property's own site. Bed prices move sharply from day to day, so book when you see a price you like. Check-in closes at 10 p.m. and later arrivals aren't accepted, so a late flight needs a plan. Outside the organised dinners and activities, some guests found it more peaceful than social.

| 9.3/10 | 529 | 4.82/5 | 4.72/5 | 4.86/5 | 4.50/5 | 4.76/5 |
Verdict: the best-rated sociable base in Cascais for surfers who'll sort out their own lessons and board hire.
Base: the heart of Cascais, in a quiet residential area 10–15 minutes' walk from the beach, the town centre and the station. The hostel's own copy puts Guincho and Carcavelos "right next to us". In practice both are a short bus or train ride, not a stroll, but Cascais's town beaches are on foot.
Surf evidence: no lessons or board hire on site; this is a coast base, not a surf house. What it does well is the day around the surf: free beach towels and umbrellas, a kitchen stocked with oil, spices, bread and coffee, and a green terrace to eat on afterwards. One guest summed up the rooms as a fit for "the Portuguese surf vibe". Staff marks are the best on the list, and security and cleanliness aren't far behind.
Worth knowing: the dorms are doorless lofts with lockers. The female dorm has five single beds with no bunks, and the mixed dorm sleeps six. Some rooms have no air-conditioning, and some guests found them hot on summer nights even with fans, so ask for an air-conditioned room if that matters. Bathrooms are shared between several rooms. Reception closes at 9 p.m., but self check-in can be arranged by WhatsApp for late arrivals.

Verdict: the city-base contender: nights in Lisbon, a commute to the break.
Base: central Lisbon, near Campo Mártires da Pátria, a short walk from Marquês de Pombal metro and a walk uphill from the city centre. Getting to Carcavelos means the metro down to Cais do Sodré first, then about 24 minutes on the train.
Surf evidence: organised rather than on site. The hostel's own listing offers to book you a surf class, alongside free walking tours and sangria nights. It's the cheapest bed on the list, the social terrace and lemon-tree garden are a proper evening scene, and with the biggest review base of the five, its strong rating is the best-tested on this page.
Worth knowing: there's no air-conditioning, and some guests found the rooms very hot in summer. Some guests felt cleanliness and bathroom upkeep weren't quite up to scratch, and a few found the push-button showers weak. The house discourages heavy drinking and doesn't allow outside alcohol, so it's a chill hostel rather than a party one. Reception runs 24 hours, and Lisbon's city tax is paid on arrival.

Verdict: the highest-rated hostel on the list, with surf access that comes down to location alone.
Base: central Cascais, a few minutes' walk from the beach, five minutes from Cascais station, and surrounded by restaurants. Location marks are perfect. The train to Lisbon takes about 30 minutes, and Sintra is a short drive inland.
Surf evidence: location only. There are no lessons, board hire or board storage, and the draw is the fundamentals instead: spotless sea-themed rooms, hotel-comfortable beds with curtains, strong hot showers, air-conditioning and bike hire. Breakfast is home-made and included, except in the mixed dorm.
Worth knowing: this is a guesthouse-style hostel, not a social one. There's no organised social programme, and some guests travelling solo found it hard to meet people. The kitchen is staff-only, so you can't cook, and some guests found the shared bathroom queues long at busy times. Reception runs 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., with check-in by 8 p.m. When we checked, only private rooms were showing a price, so check the live card for dorm availability.

Lisbon Surf Hostel is the surf name and the surf crowd, a minute from the Carcavelos train. The Salty Yoga & Surf Retreat is the only place here that actually sells lessons and board hire in-house. Neither gives you a turnkey surf trip through Hostelworld alone . Lisbon Surf Hostel doesn't sell board hire itself; at The Salty, the lessons-and-breakfast packages are sold only on its own site.
Pick Lisbon Surf Hostel for the social surf house and the train to Lisbon. Pick The Salty if you want structure: lessons, yoga and a pool, all at one address. No hostel on this list advertises dedicated board storage , so if you're travelling with your own board, ask before you book.
Both are Cascais coast bases with no lessons on site, and both keep you on foot to the beach. Ljmonade is the cheaper, more sociable one, with weekly dinners and happy hours, a guest kitchen and free beach kit, though some guests found the rooms hot in summer. Legasea - Cascais is the higher-rated, quieter house, with air-conditioning, breakfast included and the best showers on the list, but no guest kitchen and no social scene.
On a dorm budget, Ljmonade is the clear call. We'd take Legasea for a couple or a light sleeper who wants to wake up rested for the morning session.
The four coast hostels put you in the water by breakfast . Carcavelos is about 24 minutes from Cais do Sodré on the train, and the Cascais line runs on to Monte Estoril and Cascais in around half an hour. Lisbon Chillout Hostel flips the trade: Lisbon's nights on the doorstep and the cheapest bed here, but a metro-plus-train commute each way to reach the break.
Caparica, on the south bank about 30 minutes from central Lisbon, is the other surf base locals use. No Caparica hostel made this list, so it works best as a day trip rather than a place to stay.
Yes. Carcavelos is on the train line from Lisbon's Cais do Sodré station, about 24 minutes away, and the same line runs on to Monte Estoril and Cascais, so all four coast hostels on this list are car-free. The honest caveat: Caparica and day trips to Ericeira or Sintra work better with a car. Caparica is about 30 minutes from central Lisbon by road with no direct train, and a ride-hail there from the airport is quoted at around €25–30.
Yes. The main breaks within easy reach are Carcavelos, Caparica and Torre. Summer is the busy beginner season, with smaller, friendlier waves and crowded line-ups. Winter is what the local surf school calls "progress season", when the bigger swell suits surfers who already stand up.
Dorm beds on this list start at roughly €17–40 a night depending on the hostel, with private rooms costing more and The Salty's rates swinging day to day. Add a city tax of about €2–4 per person per night, paid on arrival. Group surf lessons in the area start from about €35–39 per person and private lessons from about €90. At The Salty Yoga & Surf Retreat, lessons and board hire are €45 a day each, yoga is €25 a class and breakfast is €17.50 if pre-booked, none of it included in a Hostelworld booking.
A surf-and-stay package beats a bed plus separate lessons when you'll surf most days and want breakfast sorted. If you're surfing two or three days out of a week, a cheaper bed and a couple of group lessons usually comes out ahead.
About 24 minutes by train from Cais do Sodré station, which makes Carcavelos the closest surf beach to the city without a car. Lisbon Surf Hostel is about 50 metres from Carcavelos station, with the beach roughly 500 metres further on.
