Ranked on youth-social evidence , not a star sort: who actually stays (age policy and age mix), how the house gets people talking (dinners, walking tours, day trips, busy common spaces), and whether there's a curfew or lockout. Ratings and starting dorm prices in the table come straight from Hostelworld; the Age Mix and Social Calendar columns are our read of each hostel's own policies and its guest reviews.
| Hostel | Price | Rating | Best For | Age Mix | Social Calendar |

Verdict: the clearest youth pick in Lisbon, with an 18+ rule, a crowd that skews young and a social calendar that runs from breakfast to bedtime.
Base: Praça dos Restauradores, where Avenida da Liberdade meets Baixa. The metro stop shares the square's name, the Sintra train is a short walk away at Rossio, and Alfama is a stroll east, so day one needs no planning.
Youth evidence: the house rule is strictly 18+ , and the listing itself pitches the stay at 20- to 40-year-olds; a guest in their late thirties put most of the crowd at 20 to 25. Outings run every day, family dinners gather the house in the evening, and the common areas fill with games and next-day plans. Most guests travel solo, many on their first solo trip, and it is, in one guest's words, "the easiest place to talk to people and make new friends."
Worth knowing: expect to pay more here than at the other six. Many rates bundle the Not-So-Solo package of daily activities, dinners and drinks, so compare the bundle with a bed-only rate before you choose. Reception never closes, so a late train is no problem.

Verdict: the young, no-curfew pick, with a rooftop bar that works as the hostel's living room.
Base: Rua Capitão Renato Batista in Intendente, close to the Intendente metro on the Green Line. The tourist core is a 25–35 minute walk, and Intendente is quieter and less polished than Baixa at night.
Youth evidence: "We were mostly young people and overall it was a good atmosphere to meet other travelers," as one guest summed up the crowd. There's an event on every night for meeting solo travellers and small groups, from tapas nights to the pub crawl, and the Sintra day tour is one of the most talked-about things the hostel runs. The house policy is no curfew, with a 24-hour reception (email ahead if you'll arrive after 11 p.m.).
Worth knowing: cleanliness is one of its strongest marks, and rooms open with key cards. Breakfast costs extra. Some guests found the rooms compact and the showers cool later in the day.

Verdict: the dinner-table pick for first-timers.
Base: Rua de São Nicolau, inside Baixa's grid of straight, flat streets. That grid is the easy part of Lisbon to navigate on a first visit, with no hills and no dead ends, and most of what you'll want on day one is walkable from the door.
Youth evidence: by dessert at Mamma's dinner you'll have someone to explore with the next morning, which is the whole point of the shared table, so book a place early in the day. Tip-based walking tours cover the mornings and Sintra day trips the longer days, and the living room is where people who skip the pub crawl still find company. It is, as one guest put it, a "great social hostel for first time travelers."
Worth knowing: there are female-only dorms, and group bookings aren't accepted, so you share with individual travellers rather than a booked-out crew. Check-in opens at 3:30 p.m., there's no lockout and reception is staffed round the clock, and breakfast costs extra.

Verdict: the only pick with a written upper and lower age limit, and a free nightly mixer that does the introductions for you.
Base: Beco dos Apóstolos, a lane in Chiado about five minutes on foot from Cais do Sodré station and eight from Baixa-Chiado metro. It's a central base for sightseeing on foot, and the streets nearby stay lively late.
Youth evidence: the hostel admits guests aged 16 to 50 only , and there's no curfew. The nightly free sangria is the house icebreaker, free walking tours give the daytime a shape, and on evenings without a crawl there's usually something in-house, from a film to a live set to a dinner themed on whoever's staying. Guests describe a house full of "solo travellers looking to make friends."
Worth knowing: beds are curtained and there are female-only dorms. Breakfast costs extra and the city tax is paid in cash. Some guests found it too big to feel intimate, and a few felt Chiado's late-night street life carried into the dorms.

Verdict: a dinner or outing every evening, two minutes from Rossio.
Base: Rua dos Fanqueiros, on the corner of Praça da Figueira and two minutes on foot from Rossio metro, in a 250-year-old building with São Jorge Castle in view from some rooms. Baixa's flat streets put most of the old town within walking distance.
Youth evidence: staff plan an activity every evening , including a fado dinner, group dinners and a pub crawl, and run a Sintra day tour. The welcome tea, the map briefing and the staff's habit of planning your days with you set the tone from check-in. "I made a lot of lovely friends by being part of the hostel activities," as one guest put it.
Worth knowing: the listing sets no age restrictions. There's no air-conditioning, only fans, and some guests found the rooms hot in summer and the bathrooms stretched at busy times. There's no lift, so it's five flights of stairs, and staff ask for quiet in the top-floor lounge after 11 p.m.

Verdict: the social pick for travellers who want organised company and good sleep, without a party-hostel feel.
Base: Rua Rodrigues Sampaio, behind the top of Avenida da Liberdade near Marquês de Pombal, a minute from the metro. The old town is about a 20-minute walk, downhill on the way there.
Youth evidence: this family-run hostel organises plenty to help guests socialise, and much of it is built around free food : soup and snacks from the kitchen, tapas nights, Milkshake Monday, and a free breakfast with freshly made pancakes. Pub crawls run too. One guest called it "a welcoming, young, fun environment without being a 'party' hostel."
Worth knowing: all ages are welcome, and minors can stay only by booking a whole dorm or a private room. Some guests found the crowd skewed a bit older, which slowed meeting people. Reception is open 24 hours, so there's no lockout.

Verdict: the chatty, non-party garden hostel, and an easy landing for a solo traveller.
Base: Rua Nogueira e Sousa, a quiet street near the Campo Mártires da Pátria garden, about ten minutes' walk from Marquês de Pombal metro. The walk home from the centre is uphill.
Youth evidence: the courtyard and the balcony are where guests meet, and the owner makes a point of getting the common area talking. There's a free walking tour , sangria nights and surf classes you can book. House rules bar heavy drinking and outside alcohol, and "without it being a party hostel everyone is super social and you can easily make friends," as one guest put it.
Worth knowing: there's no air-conditioning, and some guests found the rooms hot in summer. Beds have no privacy curtains, and a few guests felt cleanliness slipped at busy times. Reception is open 24 hours, and the social side depends on who's staying.

These are the two picks that put an age limit in writing, and they draw it differently. Goodmorning Solo Traveller Hostel is strictly 18+ and pitched at 20 to 40, with outings every day, family dinners and a free breakfast; Lost Inn Lisbon admits 16 to 50 and keeps it simpler, with free sangria every evening and free walking tours. Goodmorning has the tighter age match and the fuller calendar; Lost Inn has the free mixer and usually the cheaper bed.
Don't mix these two up: the names are near-identical and the welcome is similar, but they suit different trips. We Hate F Tourists has the explicitly younger crowd, no curfew, air-conditioning and the rooftop bar, but it's a 25–35 minute walk from the tourist core in Intendente.
We Love F. Tourists has the stronger dinner-and-tour calendar and the Baixa address, but the top-floor lounge goes quiet at 11 p.m. and there's no air-conditioning. We'd take We Hate F Tourists for a young summer crowd, and We Love F. Tourists for a shoulder-season trip where walking everywhere matters most.
Home Lisbon Hostel is the more central pick, and its social life is built around Mamma's dinner and the walking tours, which suits first-timers. Lisboa Central Hostel runs a comparable calendar with more of it free: the pancake breakfast, the soup and the tapas nights. The trade is the crowd and the walk: some guests found Lisboa Central skewed older, and it's about 20 minutes on foot from the old town, while Home puts you in the middle of it.
There's no single age range for a youth hostel in Lisbon: most hostels set no limit, but a few do . On this list, Goodmorning Solo Traveller Hostel is strictly 18+ and says it's best suited to travellers aged 20 to 40, and Lost Inn Lisbon admits guests aged 16 to 50 only. None of the other five sets an age limit: We Love F. Tourists states no age restrictions, and Lisboa Central Hostel welcomes all ages but takes minors only in a whole dorm or a private room.
As for "youth hostels" in the Hostelling International sense, the name is historical: they take guests of all ages, families included. Policies vary hostel to hostel and can change, so check the listing before booking if your age is near a cut-off.
"Youth hostel" has two meanings. In the strict sense it's a Hostelling International (HI) property, and in Lisbon that means HI Lisboa – Pousada de Juventude, with a second, HI Lisboa Oriente, out at Parque das Nações. In the everyday sense, which is what most people searching the term mean, it's any hostel with a young, social crowd, and every hostel on this list is an independent backpacker hostel of that kind.
The HI network also runs youth hostels across Portugal, and it caters to families and school and group trips as well as solo travellers. That broader, all-ages crowd is why HI Lisboa isn't ranked here: this page ranks on the young, social mix, which is a different trip.
When we checked, the cheapest dorm beds on this list started from about €10 to €35 a night, with most starting around €17–19. Typical dorm rates ran nearer €30–45, and they climb in the August peak. Goodmorning's bundled package puts its typical rate well above the rest.
Add Lisbon's city tax of €4 per person per night , capped at seven nights and usually paid on arrival. Budget for breakfast too: it's free at Goodmorning and Lisboa Central and an extra at most of the others.
No central neighbourhood is off-limits, but two are worth thinking twice about as a base. Bairro Alto is Lisbon's main nightlife district, which is exactly why it's a loud place to sleep: its narrow streets stay busy into the small hours, so a bed a short walk away gives you the night without the noise. Alfama is beautiful and quiet at night, but its steep, cobbled hills and staircases are hard work with a backpack, especially coming home late.
For a first trip, a base in Baixa or near Avenida da Liberdade keeps most of the city on flat streets or a short metro ride away. It's still where I send friends visiting Lisbon for the first time.
