Best Cheap Hostels in Lisbon

Every hostel on this page had to pass two tests : a dorm bed that's genuinely cheap, and a rating that holds up across a large number of Hostelworld reviews. We checked live Hostelworld dorm prices on 17 September 2026 and set the bar at roughly €10–20 a night , while the average dorm rate at most of these same hostels sits above €30. Then we read the recent guest reviews wherever a hostel had them, so every pick below says what the low price gets you and what you give up for it.

Nos. 1–5 are the cheapest tier , all from €10 to about €14. Nos. 6–8 cost a few euros more but buy a stronger or deeper rating, which is why Lisbon Lounge can be the best value at No. 6.

The one exception is Green Heart: its price belongs in the top group, but it sits at No. 9 because there are no recent reviews to back its rating up. Prices are the cheapest dorm "from" price on the day we checked, so treat them as a guide and check tonight's price on each card.

The 9 Best Cheap Hostels in Lisbon, Ranked & Reviewed

1. We Hate F Tourists

Overall Reviews Security Location Staff Fun Clean
9.3/10 1575 4.78/5 4.18/5 4.80/5 4.72/5 4.80/5

Verdict: the cheapest bed on this list and one of the best-rated, a genuine bargain if you don't mind a longer walk to the sights.

Base: Rua Capitão Renato Batista in Intendente, a few minutes from Intendente metro on the green line, among bars, music venues and street art rather than souvenir shops. The trade-off is distance, as several guests found the main tourist streets a longer walk than "central" suggests.

What the price gets you: dorms around €10–12 when we checked in September. That buys a dorm with air-conditioning and key-card access, linen, 24-hour reception, a lift, a guest kitchen and the rooftop bar. Breakfast costs extra, towels are for hire, and payment on arrival is in cash unless your bill is over €25.

Why it ranks here: nothing else on this list pairs the lowest price with ratings this strong, with security, cleanliness and staff all near the top of the scale. The team is the standout, the rooms are clean and the rooftop works as the hostel's living room. One guest called it "a perfect mix of sociable but not party party."

Worth knowing: some guests found the dorms small, and a few felt the quieter Intendente streets weren't ones they wanted to walk alone late at night.

  • For: budget travellers who want the lowest price on this list with a social rooftop.
  • Not for: anyone who wants to step straight out into the tourist centre, or who'd rather not walk back through quiet streets late at night.

2. Lisbon Destination Hostel

Overall Reviews Security Location Staff Fun Clean
9.3/10 6564 4.66/5 4.72/5 4.38/5 4.18/5 4.38/5

Verdict: the most central cheap bed in Lisbon, with one of the deepest review records in the city behind it.

Base: the second floor of Rossio train station in Baixa, reached by escalator or lift, with Rossio and Restauradores metro a couple of minutes away. Chiado, Alfama and the river are within walking distance. Trains to Sintra leave from the same building.

What the price gets you: dorms around €13–15 when we checked in September. That includes free lockers, linen, 24-hour reception, a full guest kitchen, the indoor-garden lounge, a pool table and table tennis, and Lisbon's city tax is already included in the price. Breakfast costs €12 extra, and towels are for hire.

Why it ranks here: location scores close to perfect, security isn't far behind, and it holds a high rating across thousands of reviews. The staff are a strength, the dorms are spacious with under-bed storage, and the station makes day trips easy.

Worth knowing: some guests found the air-conditioning struggled on hot summer nights. A few guests found it quieter than a party hostel.

  • For: travellers who want the most central budget base in the city and easy train access to Sintra.
  • Not for: hot sleepers visiting in July or August, or anyone who wants a lively bar scene in the building.

3. Inn Possible Lisbon Hostel

Overall Reviews Security Location Staff Fun Clean
9.3/10 2451 4.66/5 4.76/5 4.80/5 4.38/5 4.42/5

Verdict: a genuinely social hostel at a low price, as long as you're fine with the climb and a few rough edges.

Base: Rua do Regedor, on one of Lisbon's hills between Alfama and Mouraria, a short walk from Rossio and Praça do Comércio. Getting there on foot means more than 100 steps, which you'll feel with a backpack.

What the price gets you: dorms around €14–16 when we checked in September. That includes linen, air-conditioning, a guest kitchen, the free city tour and a sociable programme of family dinners, happy hours and pub crawls. Breakfast costs just €2, towels are for hire, and the €4-a-night city tax is paid on top.

Why it ranks here: the atmosphere is the reason people book. The staff and volunteers, the family dinner and the happy-hour drinks carry it, and location scores are near perfect. Sheets are changed daily, even if you're not checking out.

Worth knowing: there are a lot of stairs, inside and out, and some guests missed having privacy curtains on the beds. If you're arriving after midnight the hostel asks you to email ahead.

  • For: solo travellers who want dinners, drinks and a group to go out with, at a low price.
  • Not for: anyone with heavy luggage and no appetite for steps, or light sleepers who need a curtained bunk.

4. Sunset Destination Hostel

Overall Reviews Security Location Staff Fun Clean
8.9/10 4437 4.62/5 4.80/5 4.58/5 4.48/5 4.38/5

Verdict: a rooftop pool at a dorm-bed price, where the view does as much for the stay as the bed.

Base: inside Cais do Sodré train station, on the river. Pink Street, the Time Out Market, a supermarket and the metro are on the doorstep, and the Cascais line runs to the beaches from downstairs.

What the price gets you: dorms around €13–15 when we checked in September. That buys a pod-style bed with privacy curtains and reading lights, free lockers, linen, a full guest kitchen, 24-hour reception, the heated rooftop pool and access to the rooftop bar, and the city tax is included in the price. Breakfast costs €10 extra, and the BBQ and sangria nights are paid events.

Why it ranks here: it's the lowest-rated of the nine, but still well rated across thousands of reviews, and location scores are close to perfect. The rooftop, the BBQ and sangria nights and the staff are the draw, and it's easy to meet people solo.

Worth knowing: you're living in a busy station, so expect some street noise, and a few guests found the station entrance off-putting late at night. Some found the bathrooms small and not always clean, and the pool has closed at times out of season.

  • For: travellers who want a pool, sunsets and a social rooftop at a dorm price, with the nightlife downstairs.
  • Not for: light sleepers, or anyone who's particular about bathrooms.

5. This is Lisbon Hostel

Overall Reviews Security Location Staff Fun Clean
9.1/10 1635 4.68/5 4.50/5 4.86/5 4.36/5 4.42/5

Verdict: the quiet old-town pick, with a rooftop-view terrace worth coming back for and a price that stays low beyond the "from" figure.

Base: Costa do Castelo in Mouraria, just below the walls of St George's Castle, within walking distance of Alfama, Graça and Rossio. It's a steep, cobbled climb from Baixa, so use the free public lifts from Rua dos Fanqueiros and Rua da Madalena rather than dragging a suitcase uphill.

What the price gets you: dorms around €14–16 when we checked in September, and its average dorm rate on Hostelworld is the lowest of any hostel on this list that publishes one. That includes linen, 24-hour reception, a well-equipped guest kitchen, the terrace and free walking tours. Breakfast costs €4, towels are for hire, and the €4-a-night city tax is paid on top.

Why it ranks here: staff scores are among the highest on this list, and the atmosphere is homely and relaxed. It's rated well across a long record of reviews.

Worth knowing: there are no room keys, so you ring the doorbell to be let in. Top bunks have no curtains, and the lockers sit outside the rooms and fit a backpack rather than a suitcase. Several guests found the rooms hot in summer with no air-conditioning, and a few felt the bathrooms need updating.

  • For: travellers who want a calm, friendly base in old-town Lisbon and plan to spend evenings on the terrace.
  • Not for: anyone who needs air-conditioning in summer, a lockable dorm or a suitcase-sized locker.

6. Lisbon Lounge Hostel

Overall Reviews Security Location Staff Fun Clean
9.7/10 6056 4.86/5 4.96/5 4.94/5 4.68/5 4.86/5

Verdict: the best value on this list: a few euros above the floor, but the highest rating of the nine, and breakfast is free.

Base: Rua de São Nicolau in Baixa, a couple of streets from Rua Augusta and a few minutes from Baixa-Chiado metro. Chiado and Rossio are about three minutes' walk. It's the tourist heart of the city, so the street can be noisy at night.

What the price gets you: dorms around €16–18 when we checked in September. That includes a free breakfast every morning, free coffee and tea all day, free walking and nightlife tours, free lockers, linen, air-conditioning and 24-hour reception. The three-course hostel dinner costs a little extra, towels are €2 to rent, and the €4-a-night city tax is paid on top.

Why it ranks here: location, security, staff and cleanliness all score close to perfect, across thousands of reviews. The dorms are spacious, the bathrooms clean, the lockers big, and the dinner makes it easy to meet people. As one guest put it: "Not a party hostel but still social enough to meet people."

Worth knowing: there's no lift, and some dorms are four or five flights up, which is hard work with a heavy bag. A few guests found top bunks had no curtains and were woken by the motion-sensor lights along the walkway, and some found breakfast light on protein.

  • For: travellers who'll pay a few euros more for the best-rated bed on the list, a free breakfast and a central base.
  • Not for: anyone who can't manage stairs, or who wants a hostel bar that keeps going late.

7. Lost Inn Lisbon

Overall Reviews Security Location Staff Fun Clean
9.4/10 7279 4.82/5 4.86/5 4.78/5 4.56/5 4.50/5

Verdict: the sociable budget pick in Chiado, with free sangria every night and a big review record behind it.

Base: Beco dos Apóstolos in Chiado, five minutes' walk from Cais do Sodré station and Pink Street and about eight from Baixa-Chiado metro. Bairro Alto, Rossio and Baixa are all within ten minutes.

What the price gets you: dorms around €17–19 when we checked in September. That includes the evening sangria, linen, 24-hour reception, key-card access that also opens large under-bed lockers, reading lights, air-conditioning and a well-equipped guest kitchen. Breakfast costs €5, towels are for hire, and the €4-a-night city tax is paid on top.

Why it ranks here: security and location score close to perfect across thousands of reviews. The nightly sangria is the easy way to meet people, the dorms are spacious, the staff are good, and the lockers are big enough for a suitcase.

Worth knowing: the hostel only takes guests aged 16 to 40, and the surrounding streets are loud at night. Some guests found the air-conditioning struggling in summer, and a few felt bathroom cleanliness slipped at busy times.

  • For: travellers aged 16 to 40 who want an easy social start to the evening and Pink Street five minutes away.
  • Not for: light sleepers, or anyone outside the age limit.

8. Sant Jordi Hostels Lisbon

Overall Reviews Security Location Staff Fun Clean
9.2/10 4288 4.84/5 4.36/5 4.52/5 4.32/5 4.56/5

Verdict: the most comfortable bed at the top of the budget band, a beautiful building that trades a central address for space and calm.

Base: Rua do Forno do Tijolo in Arroios, about five minutes from Anjos metro on the green line, with Tram 28 stopping outside. The hostel says the centre is 20 minutes' walk away, and several guests found it closer to 25 or 30.

What the price gets you: dorms around €18–20 when we checked in September, the highest starting price on this list. That includes air-conditioning in every room, curtained beds with reading lights and charging points, lockers in each dorm, linen, 24-hour reception, free luggage storage, a large guest kitchen and the garden courtyard. Breakfast costs extra, there's a €10 cash deposit for your key card, and the €4-a-night city tax is paid on top.

Why it ranks here: security is its strongest score, and it's rated well across thousands of reviews. The building, the garden and bar, the comfortable, private beds and the helpful staff are the draw; one guest said it felt more like a hotel than a hostel.

Worth knowing: some guests found it less social than they'd hoped: it's big, many guests are remote workers, and tour or school groups sometimes fill the dorms. The bar is open to the public, so guests wear a wristband.

  • For: travellers who want a comfortable, private bed, air-conditioning and a garden to work or relax in.
  • Not for: anyone who wants to walk out into the centre, or who's looking for a busy social scene.

9. Green Heart Hostel

Overall Reviews Security Location Staff Fun Clean
9.0/10 1462 — — — — —

Verdict: the second-cheapest bed on the list and well rated over the years, but with the thinnest recent evidence of the nine.

Base: Rua Santa Marta 37, a three-minute walk from Avenida metro on the blue line and just off Avenida da Liberdade, on a street the hostel describes as safe and cosy.

What the price gets you: dorms around €12–14 when we checked in September. That includes linen, lockers, key-card access, reading lights and a guest kitchen, and the hostel says its dorms were remodelled with spacious beds focused on privacy. Breakfast isn't included, towels are for hire, and the €4-a-night city tax is paid at check-in.

Why it ranks here: its overall rating is good across a long review record, and the price is hard to beat this close to the Avenida. It sits last because we can't check that rating against the current experience.

Worth knowing: we found no recent guest reviews for Green Heart, so there's nothing recent to confirm how the stay feels today. There's also no 24-hour reception: check-in runs from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m., so plan a late arrival carefully. The hostel doesn't accept minors.

  • For: adult travellers arriving in the daytime who want a low price in a calm, central street.
  • Not for: late-night arrivals, or anyone who wants recent guest feedback before booking.

Which Cheap Hostel Is Yours?

We Hate F Tourists vs Green Heart: the two cheapest beds

We Hate F Tourists and Green Heart Hostel have the two lowest "from" prices on this page, less than €3 apart. The difference is evidence and energy . We Hate F Tourists has a rooftop bar, 24-hour reception and a long run of glowing recent reviews; Green Heart is the quieter Avenida base, with a good rating but no recent reviews and no desk after 11 p.m.

We'd take We Hate F Tourists for most trips. Pick Green Heart if you're arriving in the daytime, want to be close to the Avenida and Bairro Alto rather than Intendente, and prefer a calm street to a social rooftop.

Lisbon Lounge vs Sant Jordi: worth a few euros more

Lisbon Lounge Hostel and Sant Jordi Hostels Lisbon sit at the top of the budget band, less than €4 apart. Lisbon Lounge is the cheaper and higher-rated of the two, and its free breakfast narrows the gap to the floor even further.

Location settles it for most people: Lisbon Lounge puts you in Baixa, a few minutes from everything, while Sant Jordi is a tram ride or a 20–30 minute walk out in Arroios. Pick Sant Jordi if you'd rather have a garden, a curtained bed and a calmer scene than a central address.

Inn Possible vs This is Lisbon: organised fun vs terrace calm

Inn Possible Lisbon Hostel and This is Lisbon Hostel start within 20 cents of each other and both sit on the old-town hills. Inn Possible is the organised social option: family dinners, happy hours, pub crawls and a €2 breakfast, with the stairs and the honest caveats above. This is Lisbon is the mellow one: a view-filled terrace, a homely kitchen and a quieter crowd.

Pick Inn Possible if you want a group to go out with every night. Pick This is Lisbon if you want old-town calm and a terrace sunset, and you can live without air-conditioning and a room key.

Cheap Hostel FAQ

How much does a hostel in Lisbon actually cost?

On this list, dorm beds started at €10 to €19.75 a night, with most between €13 and €17. Those are "from" prices, the cheapest bed on the cheapest night: We Hate F Tourists starts at €10, but its average dorm rate on Hostelworld sits nearer €34. On many nights, you'll pay more than the "from" figure.

On top of the bed, Lisbon charges a city tax of €4 per person per night , for up to seven nights. Lisbon Destination and Sunset Destination include it in the price; most of the others collect it on arrival. Breakfast ranges from free at Lisbon Lounge to €2 at Inn Possible, €4 at This is Lisbon, €5 at Lost Inn, €10 at Sunset Destination and €12 at Lisbon Destination.

What is the cheapest way to book hostels in Lisbon?

Book a few days ahead rather than on the day, and if your dates are flexible, travel outside the August peak. Check the live price on each card above rather than trusting a screenshot or an old list: "from" prices move daily, and the card shows what's available now. All nine publish a standard-rate cancellation window of about 48 hours before arrival (We Hate F Tourists' terms also mention three days), but deposits aren't always refunded and non-refundable rates exist, so read the terms before you book.

Then cut the extras. A free or €2 breakfast (Lisbon Lounge, Inn Possible) and a guest kitchen, which all nine hostels have, will save more over a week than a euro or two on the bed.

Where can you stay in Lisbon cheaply?

The cheapest well-rated beds on this list are in three areas. Intendente , home to We Hate F Tourists, has the lowest price and a real local feel, but it's a longer walk to the sights. Baixa and Rossio (Lisbon Destination, Lisbon Lounge, with Inn Possible and This is Lisbon on the hills just above) cost a few euros more but put you on flat streets within walking distance of almost everything, so you'll spend less on transport.

Avenida , where Green Heart sits, is a calm, central option with a metro stop close by and Bairro Alto within walking distance. Arroios, home to Sant Jordi, is further out and at the top of the budget band, but you get more space for the money.

Where should you avoid staying in Lisbon?

No neighbourhood on this list is a no-go, but a few need street sense. What catches people out is pickpocketing on crowded trams and around Cais do Sodré late at night, plus the "hash" sellers who work Baixa: what they sell is fake, so keep walking. On a packed 28 tram, my phone lives in a zipped pocket.

Intendente's side streets go quiet after dark and the area around Cais do Sodré station gets rougher late at night, so stick to main roads or take the metro late. Every hostel on this list has lockers, so bring a padlock that fits .

Not Quite Your Trip?

Want more privacy than the lowest price buys? The Private Room Hostels in Lisbon page ranks the hostels where you can have a room to yourself without paying hotel prices.

Want the all-styles verdict rather than the budget one? The Best Hostels in Lisbon page ranks the city's hostels for every kind of trip.

The Verdict

For the lowest price on this list, book We Hate F Tourists: dorms around €10–12 when we checked in September, strong ratings and a rooftop bar, as long as you don't mind the walk from Intendente. If a few euros more is fine, Lisbon Lounge is the best value on this list, with the highest rating of the nine and a free breakfast. Lisbon Destination is the most central cheap bed, Inn Possible the one for a ready-made group, and Sunset Destination the one with a pool.
